Artist Statement 2009
Art is a practice whose primary function is to challenge and stimulate the imagination. My work is an exploration of our perceived notions of space within our daily environment.
I am intrigued by the senses. We Acknowledge our place within the world based on discoveries made through vision and touch. These interactions begin in infancy as playful experiments. As we perceive through play we increase our knowledge of what is possible, probable and imaginary.
My work consists of nebulous 3-dimensional compositions created from
tactile materials such as wool, plastic or vinyl. This work functions within the gallery as an interactive sculpture-installation that encourages the viewer to explore through vision and touch and through physically navigating within its structure.
Imagination is the making of all things. Often one small stimulus can spawn and entire world of possibilities, new ideas and inventions. The life of the artwork is much more than the beauty of its formal components. Art can act as a catalyst for the creation/development/discovery of new mental spaces, unique within each individual viewer. These new experiences present new challenges, increasing our knowledge of the world around us.
